Three levels of sedation, and which one fits
Sedation is not one thing. We match the level to how anxious you are and how long the treatment takes, and you can change your mind at any visit.
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)
A mask over the nose. You feel calm within minutes, stay awake, and it wears off before you leave, so you drive yourself. Good for cleanings, fillings, crowns and children. See nitrous oxide.
Oral sedation
A prescribed tablet an hour before. Deeply relaxed, awake enough to respond, and most people remember little. Needs a driver. See oral sedation.
IV sedation
Medication through a small line, adjusted moment to moment, monitored throughout. You sleep through implants, wisdom teeth or a full treatment plan. Needs a driver. See IV sedation.
Is sedation safe? How we keep it that way
Sedation in a dental office is safe when it is planned for you and monitored. This is how we do it.
- Medical history first. Medications, heart and lung conditions, sleep apnoea, allergies and previous sedation experiences are reviewed before anything is prescribed.
- Your physician when needed. For some conditions we ask for a note before IV sedation.
- Monitored throughout. Oxygen level, heart rate and blood pressure are tracked during oral and IV sedation, and someone stays with you until you are ready to leave.
- Clear instructions. When to stop eating, which medicines to take that morning, and who is driving. You get them in writing.

Who sedation is for
Fear that has kept you away
If it has been years and the thought of the chair is the problem, sedation breaks the cycle. Many patients do their whole treatment plan in one or two sedated visits and then find regular checkups manageable.
Practical reasons, not just fear
- A strong gag reflex that makes X-rays and impressions miserable.
- Difficulty getting numb with local anaesthetic alone.
- Several procedures you would rather finish in one long visit.
- Implants, All-on-4 or wisdom teeth, where being asleep is simply more comfortable.
- Special needs, or a medical condition that makes long appointments hard.
Children do well with nitrous oxide. Deeper sedation for children is discussed case by case.
Cost and how to arrange it
Quoted with the treatment
Sedation is priced by level and length and appears on the same written estimate as the treatment, so you see one total. Nitrous is the least expensive; IV sedation the most.
- Insurance rarely covers sedation for anxiety alone, though some plans contribute for surgical procedures. We check.
- CareCredit and Cherry cover sedation and treatment together in one monthly plan.
Booking a sedated visit
Tell the front desk you want sedation when you book. Nitrous can be added on the day; oral and IV sedation need a short consultation first so the medication and timing are planned. Call (530) 406-1730; we speak English, Hindi, Punjabi and Spanish.
Three options
- Nitrous oxide (laughing gas): relaxed but awake, wears off in minutes, drive yourself home. For cleanings, fillings and nervous kids.
- Oral sedation: a pill an hour before. Deeply relaxed, drowsy, little memory of the visit. Bring a driver.
- IV sedation: asleep for the appointment, monitored throughout. For extractions, implants, long treatment plans and severe anxiety.
Who asks for sedation
People with a bad experience years ago. People with a strong gag reflex. People who need a lot of work and want it done in one or two visits instead of ten. People who simply do not want to be aware of it. All of them are welcome, and none of them get a lecture.
Safety
We review your health history and medications before the appointment. Oral and IV sedation patients are monitored throughout and must have a driver. Some heart and lung conditions need a note from your physician first.

Is sedation covered by insurance?
Nitrous oxide sometimes. Oral and IV sedation are usually not, and are quoted separately in writing.
Will I be unconscious with IV sedation?
You are deeply relaxed and asleep, but breathing on your own and able to respond. Most patients remember nothing.
Can I get all my dental work done in one visit with sedation?
Often, yes. That is one of the main reasons people choose IV sedation.
