What a dental implant is
A dental implant is a small titanium post placed where a tooth root used to be. Bone grows onto it over a few months. A connector and a porcelain crown go on top.
The result looks, feels and chews like the tooth you lost. It does not come out at night, and you clean it with a toothbrush and floss.
Why it beats a bridge or a partial denture
- A bridge means grinding down the two healthy teeth beside the gap.
- A partial denture sits on the gum, moves when you eat, and comes out at night.
- Both leave the bone unused. Unused jawbone slowly shrinks, which is why a face can look older after tooth loss. An implant keeps that bone working.
One tooth, several, or a whole arch
One implant replaces one tooth. Two can carry a three-tooth bridge. Four to six support a full fixed arch: see All-on-4 and All-on-X.

3. Healing, then the crown
Three to six months while the bone locks onto the implant. A temporary is fitted where the gap shows. The final crown is shade-matched and fitted in one short visit.

Who is a candidate, and how long implants last
Most adults with a missing tooth qualify
At the consultation we check two things: gum health, because implants fail in untreated gum disease, and bone volume, which the CT scan answers.
Smoking and poorly controlled diabetes slow healing. We talk about that honestly rather than rule anyone out. Long-time denture wearers with less bone can still get fixed teeth with a graft or an All-on-4 approach.
